Operation Overlord – Omaha Beach D-DAY 6 JUNE 1944

To Our Heroes – We Salute You.
I have had the honor of meeting some of these men. I met two of them several years ago at a Memorial Day celebration and we spent the afternoon talking. One of them flew as a pilot with the Flying Tigers over Burma and knew Gregory “Pappy” Boyington. The other fought at both Tarawa and Iwo Jima. At the end of the afternoon, as we all stood preparing to leave I looked both men in the eyes as I shook their hands and expressed my gratitude. I could see that both men were overwhelmed with emotion. I will never forget that day.
These men are quiet, reserved, humble, soft-spoken and respectful. They do not boast. In fact, many of them are hesitant to speak of their memories of these times with strangers. They will defer from any type of flattery and tell you that they were simply carrying out their duty.
These men displayed a level of courage, bravery, honor and valor that most of the rest of us cannot even fathom.
These men’s actions profoundly changed the course of history forever, and the lives of nearly every human being on this planet from that time forward.
Every aspect of the life you enjoy today is a direct result of the sacrifices made by these brave men.

I salute you, gentlemen…and I sincerely thank you for what you’ve done from the very bottom of my heart.
We owe you a debt that we will never have the ability to repay.

“ You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world. ”

While this isnt particularly new news, it does have a place here and it is particularly noteworthy to this writer that only a very, very small handful of vehicles have ever been elevated to the status of works of fine art by MOMA and placed in their permanent collection. Industrial design taken to its highest level indeed. When your product gets placed in the Modern Museum of Art you have officially earned the right to brag a little.

Over the course of his career, Sean Scully has developed a vocabulary for the stripe that expresses a wide range of emotions and ideas. Within a seemingly narrow iconography, the artist has produced brilliantly nuanced effects by experimenting with the dimension, color and composition of the stripe in its vertical, horizontal and diagonal orientations. By constructing his paintings on a heroic scale in multi-paneled arrangements, he injects a sculptural quality that heightens the work’s texture and design.

The Grand Daddy has infused all its rooms and communal spaces with magical creative touches. Grand Daddy’s warm and hospitable staff will guide you through by offering little-known information about the surrounds and the history. Of course, The Grand Daddy’s big talking point is its ‘penthouse’ Airstream trailer park, where a collection of vintage Airstream caravans nestle beneath the backdrop of Table Mountain. Designed by local artists all 7 two-sleeper trailers offer an accommodation destination like no other.

We had the very distinct privilege of assisting with this unique and ambitious project.

Sweet 1937 Ford Woodie

by Vintage Airstream on June 1, 2009

Rare 1937 Ford Model 78 Deluxe Woodie Station Wagon

Originally station wagons were referred to as ‘depot hacks’ and were vehicles designed to haul guests and their luggage from train stations to hotels or resorts. In the beginning coach building firms such as Murray and Baker Raulang took delivery of a complete chassis and added the wooden bodywork before returning it to the OEM builder for final assembly. Henry Ford believed so strongly in the use of wood he purchased over 300,000 acres of forest in Michigans Upper Peninsula as a direct supply to the company’s production efforts. The facility came to be know as Iron Mountain and was originally a sawmill and kiln drying facility. Iron Mountain eventually became solely responsible for the production of the station wagon and other wood based bodies for Ford. Over the following decades the stylish workhorses produced there became the preferred choice of surfers and outdoor enthusiasts for their carrying capacity and durability. Today car collectors treasure them for their sheer beauty and rarity.
